Child Dependent Health Premium Benefit Program for Graduate Student Employees

Benefit

GSRs and ASEs employed in a qualifying appointment(s) are eligible to receive a reimbursement payment to cover the cost of UCSHIP Voluntary Health Insurance premium for their enrolled child dependents, if their income exceeds the designated Medi-Cal eligibility threshold.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a reimbursement payment, ASEs and GSRs must meet the criteria in the Health Benefits article of the ASE (Article 14) and GSR (Article 13) collective bargaining agreements.

Summary of Eligibility Criteria:  

  • A registered student with at least a 25% appointment for the quarter as an ASE or GSR (or combination of the two) represented by the United Auto Workers

  • ASE/GSR income that exceeds the Medi-Cal eligibility threshold for their family size.

Summary of Ineligibility:  

  • ASE/GSR with income below Medi-Cal eligibility threshold for their family size.

  • ASE/GSR with spouse or domestic partner that contributes income resulting in exceeding the Medi-Cal eligibility threshold for their family size.

Medi-Cal eligibility threshold: For the purposes of eligibility for the benefit, the Medi-Cal eligibility threshold is determined by the annual income of the ASE/GSR (see above). Information about Medi-Cal eligibility is posted on the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) website.


UC Voluntary SHIP Program

  • Eligible Child Dependent: Eligible child dependents are defined by UCSHIP plan regulations
  • Premium Cost: UCSHIP Graduate Voluntary Plan Cost Sheet 
  • Enrollment Information: Students with UCSHIP who have eligible dependents may elect to enroll them in the dependent coverage. Enrollment in this coverage is voluntary and must be renewed each term to continue coverage. Students are responsible for enrolling their child dependent prior to the enrollment deadline. Reimbursement Process

Eligible ASEs and GSRs will receive a reimbursement to cover the cost of their premium for a child dependent UC SHIP Voluntary Health Insurance plan. The current program cost sheet shows the per-term premium costs for voluntary UC SHIP coverage.
  1. Within 10 days of enrollment, ASEs/GSRs must complete the Child Dependent Health Insurance Attestation Form and email it to the Graduate Division (gss-group@ucsc.edu) with proof of enrollment in UCSC Voluntary SHIP coverage. Please provide the email receipt from Academic Health Plans (AHP). Please do not submit any confidential information with the attestation form; the Graduate Division or Academic Personnel will follow up if any specific, confidential details are needed.
  2. The Graduate Division will review the information submitted and forward the request for processing. A reimbursement payment will be issued no later than sixty (60) calendar days from submission of the required documentation, provided that the documentation submitted is complete and accurate, and that the ASE/GSR is eligible for the benefit.
