As part of the UC AGEP program, UCSC AGEP is a partner in the system-wide effort to increase the number of underrepresented minority students (African American, Hispanic/Latino, Puerto Rican, Native American and, Native Pacific Islander) who are in science, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate Ph.D programs and who are interested in careers in the professoriate. UCSC AGEP provides activities and support services for eligible undergraduate and graduate students.

We are actively involved in an NSF initiative to combine the efforts of AGEP and IGERT as partner organizations. Check out these web sites. IGERT is a program developed by the National Science Foundation to improve the graduate experience. IGERT provides interdisciplinary graduate training for students who wish to pursue careers in the sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics.

We are also developing a new partnership with Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at University of Southern California (USC), and we invite you to join this summer for exciting interdisciplinary research experiences in advanced biomedicine for incurable human diseases. You will be working with the Enginieering Research Center (ERC) for Biomimetic MicroElectronic Systems (BMES) on advanced neural prosthetic devices. The Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Summer Institute is designed to provide advanced doctoral students with intensive training and experiences to enhance their preparation for the professoriate. Institute sessions and workshops address topics such as the academic job search, learning outcomes assessment, writing a teaching philosophy, diverse teaching/learning strategies, professional networking, writing effective grant proposals, scholarship of teaching and learning, and teaching culturally diverse students. The University at Albany is pleased to announce its sixth annual Preparing for the Professoriate Conference scheduled for April 24-25, 2009. This National Science Foundation (NSF) & Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) sponsored conference is designed to communicate the necessity of preparing a diverse professoriate in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
